Mike Johnston, NECA executive director, standards and safety, added his expertise on electric vehicle supply equipment to an article in the fall issue of American Garage magazine, “Do-It-Yourselfers for EV Charging Stations: Not the Same as Learning How to Lay Tile.”
The article focused on the Level 2 charging stations to be installed by EV owners at home, and how those installations are probably not the right place for homeowners to exercise their “can-do spirit.”
From the article:
“…[Johnston] indicates that there are important and specific requirements in the NEC (National Electrical Code) and other applicable standards that the DIYers are just not aware of. Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) installation(s) and wiring should be performed by qualified persons who have been trained in understanding and applying all safety and installation codes to such installations. This is not a job for a handyman. Qualified electrical contractors and their electricians have the knowledge and expertise to ensure a positive installation experience that will not only perform, it will be safe. Contractors also have the necessary relationship with the building safety authorities (inspectors) and are able to obtain electrical installation permits, inspections and approvals as required.”
